The Collins Bay Extension (CBE) property was obtained through Bayswater's merger with Northern Canadian Uranium Inc (NCA) in December 2007. The property is situated on the northeastern extension of the Collins Bay Fault in the eastern margin of the Athabasca Basin. Twelve high priority targets were the subject of a drill program in 2008. Results demonstrated significant uranium content in one area which requires further evaluation. Five additional targets have been identified for future drilling. In July 2009, Bayswater optioned the property to CanAlaska Uranium Ltd. (CanAlaska) who will act as the exploration operator moving forward.
Location & History
Located in the eastern extremity of the Athabasca Basin, the CBE property consists of 92,000 acres of contiguous land claims located on the northeastern extension of the Collins Bay Fault, on the west side of Wollaston Lake. The Collins Bay Fault zone is the controlling structure for the uranium deposits at the nearby Eagle Point, Collins Bay, and Rabbit Lake deposits which collectively contain a uranium resource of approximately 140 million pounds U3O8. The CBE covers over 25 km of prospective strike extension of the Collins Bay structure.
The region has hosted mining operations for decades and the deposit is close to power, mill, and road infrastructure. The closest town is Wollaston Post.
The Athabasca Basin is widely recognized as the premier region in the world for high-grade unconformity-type uranium deposits like McArthur River and Cigar Lake. The region accounts for approximately 23% of the world's uranium supply.
Geology & Mineraliztion
The property lies along the north-eastern extension of the Collins Bay Fault and also covers sub-parallel regional faults associated with the Eagle Point, Collins Bay and Rabbit Lake uranium deposits immediately to the southwest, that are owned and operated by Cameco Corporation.
Uranium Mineralization occurs in the basement rocks, is generally near surface, has favourable metallurgy and competent host rocks typical of the Eagle Point Mine.
Exploration
Prior to the amalgamation with Bayswater, NCA conducted an early stage exploration program at CBE to identify priority targets. The Company prepared an exploration database covering the entire property which integrated regional geological data with data from a VTEM electromagnetic and airborne magnetics survey. The database identified prospective regions associated with fault zones and airborne geophysical conductors that extend for a combined strike length of over 100 km.
NCA further prioritized the targets using a geological model based on field tours of operating mines and available literature. NCA also developed a unique geochemical sampling technique which uses real-time evaluation of radon gas to provide geologists with immediate results. The immediate receipt of results however, allows geologists to follow-up encouraging results right away. In 2007, a 1400-sample program employing this technique was conducted to further define potential targets.
Drilling to test twelve high-priority targets began in early 2008. Results included anomalous concentrations assaying up to 710 ppm U over 0.5 metres that were intersected in hole CBE-22.
Detailed evaulation of previous exploration results has outlined five high priority targets that are recommended for future drilling. One of these targets is in the vicinity of an area where historical drilling intersected 0.152% U3O8 over 4 metres.
Management believes that this property has very good potential for a basement hosted deposit.
In July 2009, Bayswater optioned the Collins Bay Extension (CBE) property to CanAlaska who will act as exploration operator moving forward. This arrangement will allow Bayswater to continue to advance the CBE project while it focuses on its more advanced-stage properties elsewhere. For details of the agreement, see the press release dated July 15, 2009.
